Non-tourist Italy

Laurito, SA, Italia

Don't like when the restaurant has an English menu? Annoying crowds of tourists rushing in search of souvenirs and toilets? Do you want to not understand what the neighbors are talking about on the beach? Or that no one from the first (and fifth) time did not understand where you came from? And pizza for 2-4 euros, and it will be the most delicious of those you have tried in your life? Maybe there is a desire to fight for the last free table with Italian retirees in one of the two restaurants in the village?

If you answer at least three questions with a sure "yes", then feel free to read on! You will like it ;-)

For starters, the introductory data.

Late August-early September. Location: Laurito, SA, Italia

Car: without him, nowhere.

Just 5 days, and how many pleasant experiences. And bright photos, which I suggest you look at now, and finish reading my writing later.

I must say, the choice of this region was almost random. When planning the route, we had to return from the port of Brindisi by rented car to Naples. But they decided to pave their way in such a way as to stay for a few days somewhere in a beautiful place not far from the sea. I did not want a popular destination, although at the beginning I thought we would choose accommodation near the beautiful city of Maratea.

In addition, they chose the sea in the mountains: I do not like the flat beaches.

So, I'm sitting in Kiev, and I'm thinking how to find an apartment more beautiful, but cheaper.

It turned out that the region I chose, and this is the vicinity of Maratea, perhaps even Scalea: not such a tourist place. And even vice versa, only tourists there are not foreign, but quite local. As for Scalea, there are even very specific locals, I would call them "summer residents". A resident of Scalea from "our former" wrote in one of the forums why there are so many poor people on the beaches in the summer. Here's how we have: bedding, sandwiches, mass outings with the whole family to eat by the sea.

Nourished German, have allocated sites for locals on the sea, they there not houses built, and halabudki and sheds. And some trailers are brought for the summer. People are simple, often not rich, that's how they rest.

For this reason, Scalea disappeared. Although I did not like the housing there, and very "south", and the mountains are not impressive.

At the same time, I discovered the airbnb website. I knew about it, but did not use it. And then Julia (who accompanied my husband and me on this trip) shared a real and positive experience of renting, and then said that her friend is successfully renting out housing in Ethiopia through this site. Well, rushed! I looked at everything that is rented from Agropoli to Maratea on this site. There are three of us, so, in principle, we could choose a one-room apartment with a sofa in the kitchen, but when we found this kind of apartment with a price of 45 bucks a day, we understand, we take https://ru. airbnb. com/rooms/3485350? s = zb1w

Going forward, I will say that we were pleased with our choice. Although there are drawbacks. The downside, as it seemed to us then, was the distance to the sea, as well as a narrow mountain road. And this is 25 km per minute…

In fact, it was a big plus.

I am very glad that I managed to persuade my husband to this particular home, because here we could feel the very "real Italy", about which we read and heard so much, but never saw, although we traveled half the country.

We got to Laurito late at night, because I really didn't want to leave Mother (about whom I wrote a separate story). The road from Mother to Laurito, though not long, was tedious. First of all, because of the mountainousness: the highway was a very small piece, the rest: very mediocre quality regional roads. Several short sections were quite reminiscent of the Motherland: pits, patches, height difference at the curb.

Unfortunately, we were not lucky enough to get to a very beautiful village, but it was very close. There was no time. This is Castelmezzano. Google, stunningly beautiful place! There were other picturesque villages, small castles, but all this can be seen in other places.

As we approached our Laurito, at night, in the dark, on a narrow serpentine road, which in some places was of very poor quality, we were sadly silent. They were silent as they had been a week earlier, in the same darkness, on almost the same road in Albania from Vlora to Saranda. Waiting for the worst. In addition, it was already 10 pm, the landlord was called several times, apologizing for such a late arrival and promising that we had 40 minutes left. And then we call again, we have another 40 minutes to go… The last 50 km. The road is mountainous, deformed, the edge is often slightly collapsed or washed away, the remnants of landslides or areas washed away by water are visible somewhere. But yes, all such areas are fenced off with caps, ribbons, signs…

And here is Laurito. A small village (Vicky speaks for 940 inhabitants), located on a straight section of road between two sharp, 360 degrees. turns. On both sides of the main road there are old houses on 3-4 floors, a little further there are houses with small pieces of land, gardens and orchards. A tiny village, with a center we didn't notice at night.

Who is interested, here is the site of the village / commune http://www. comune. laurito. sa. it/

I will only say that the first mention of the village was as early as 947.

The owner was waiting for us on his typewriter, led us to the house, showing a master class on arrival in the yard (we succeeded once from the third). The owner is a young friendly guy, whom we apparently distracted from Saturday gatherings with friends, so his friends were in his car. He gave us the keys, told us everything in great detail and showed us around the house (keys, locks, internet, water, gas, food, linen, parking) and we never saw him again until the eviction.

Tired, we immediately fell asleep.

And in the morning just stunned! We have a huge wide balcony around the perimeter of all apartments! We have mountains and clouds on all sides. Stunningly beautiful view! I must say that it was colder here than on the coast. Fog, dew in the morning, even cool in the evening. One day there was a very heavy downpour with thunderstorms. But what were the photos before the storm, and how fresh the air is!

We walked around the village every day. All because the village turned out to be very old, some of the houses are so dilapidated that no one lives. And the other part of the houses, on the contrary, beautiful, well-groomed. Not so often in Europe have I seen such contrasts, and even with gorgeous views around. There are no hotels in the village, no tourists, only two restaurants, they are in the center and in the evenings there is no place for an apple to fall. Local retirees occupy almost all the tables. On the third day we knew them all in person! There are many shops, but they are tiny. There are also a couple of bars / cafes. But there you can only drink coffee with a croissant, and roll. And in the morning "oil painting": in front of the cafe is a huge table, behind him local grandfathers, all as one, with croissants and coffee, chatting and, apparently, discussing rare passers-by. There are so few passers-by that out of boredom the grandfathers talk to strangers, that is, to us.

The conversation does not stick. They all tell us something in Italian. Not parlo bene italiano: that's all we know.

A long pause. Then they say something, we hear something like "Deutschland?" But. "Poland?" But. And so on… Did not guess. This is the first case in Europe (after Albania) when the idea of saying "Rousseau" did not occur to foreigners…

And they are "not parlo bene engles". We sat, smiled, ate a croissant and went on.

During the siesta, nothing works. We had lunch at home or on the coast. But in the evening we went to a local restaurant every day. We chose one and went there every day. I must say that this is exactly what my husband and I have been looking for in Italy for a long time. Really local village cuisine. No ponts and chic.

First, no tourists. All their own, including the "morning grandfathers" in full force, almost the same person every night. TV with football, and at that time, as it turned out, there was an Italian championship with the participation of "Napoli", for which everyone was emotionally in pain! Mentally.

Secondly, no English menu and not a word of English from the waiters: not only do not speak, but do not understand. And, if you think that in the menu where 4 sheets from 6 it is pizza, the Italian language will not be useful to you, you are mistaken. Actually, ordering the most expensive pizza here (oh my God!) For 5 euros, I did not think they would bring a huge "calzone". At the same time, a separate sheet was set aside in the menu on the "calzone". It was difficult to explain what tea was, and things like that, simple enough. It was easy only with wine. All pizzas cost from 2 to 3. 5 euros. There were a few on the 5th - this is the highest price of the entire menu.

Third, no serving, no "landing", envelope, etc. Only "tips" at your discretion. But no cards. Cash.

And most importantly: everything is very tasty!

What to do in Laurito?

Honestly, except for hiking and sitting in a couple of cafes, there is nothing to do there. That is why we have repeatedly "descended" from the mountains to the sea. Fortunately, the road we took to Laurito from Mother, Potenza, we no longer had to ride. If you go to Laurito from the coast, the road here is much better, although it is just as narrow, but more gentle; although there are areas with repairs and landslides, but they are few. We drove the same road to the town on the coast and on the beaches near it, it is Marina DiCamerota (hereinafter briefly called the city "Marina").

The road to Marina is very picturesque, on one side of the mountain and valley, and on the other mountains and sea. You drive among olive groves and vineyards, occasionally come across tiny hamlets, and very rarely people or cars. In one place we saw huge eucalyptus thickets, however, there was a warning about "Stop, private property. " This was hinted at by the barbed wire ;-)

And below, the road passes into the gorge, along the river, among the high and steep cliffs.

In addition, if you go to Laurito from Salerno and Naples, then almost 10 km from the Marina - the highway. At what, it is free. However, we left it later, because we needed to drive to the city of Paestum.

The small town on the coast, like all its peers, has a central beach, there is a marina, there is a promenade with restaurants, parking, hotels. And there are already tourists here. Not much, but still. We did not swim here. Just ate at a restaurant, with the usual prices (not like in our Laurito).

The attraction of the Marina and its surroundings are, in addition to the picturesque spacious beaches, also inaccessible from land, coves with small beaches. Moreover, the rocky shore with beaches that can only be sailed, quite long. In this region, there are many options to get to these coves, including a sightseeing boat, which is both in the Marina and the town on the other side of the cliffs. We had little time, and desire too, because a few days before that, in Albania, we were already resting in similar bays.

On the other side of the marina, the road runs along the sea and 15 kilometers of this road thus end up right at the beach. Large beach, pebble, under rocks, occasionally small rocks or stones protrude from the water, with pure water. But there are downsides, parking on the roadside, under the rocks (stones), there are already sellers of all sorts of garbage, attachments.

It is worth noting that part of the coast near the Marina is not available to tourists in the mode of "arrived, bought, left". On the shore, large areas are occupied by various hotels, campsites, private villas, golf clubs and a checkpoint system in the form of locked gates, barriers, etc.

But the most interesting for me in this region was the city of San Severino Di Centola. I didn't even know the name then. We just saw the ruins of the castle on the rocks, and it was just the entrance to the gorge and the castle looked impregnable.

And in the evening, together with a friend, I managed to find some information. Very little in Italian. I will give a brief free retelling of this "dead city". It turned out that this was not a castle, but the ruins of an abandoned old settlement.

San Severino Di Centola

The city, or rather a fortified village is located near the coast (Marina Di Camerota). At the beginning of the gorge "Devil's Throat" in the valley of the Mingardo River. The city is very old, according to various versions, founded either in the X-XI century or in the VII. Strategically important defensive object until the 17th century, then gradually began to lose its significance. + Poverty and plague have done their job. And in 1888, after the construction of the Pasciotta-Castrocucco railway, the surviving population began to move down to the river valley. Although the city was partially inhabited until about the 1930s, the local church remained the only one in the city until 1977.

Today, San Severino di Centola is a small abandoned and ruined town (only a few streets left), and the ruins of a fortress on the rocks. Getting here is not difficult, because modern settlements are located right under the rocks. Although, official visits are prohibited.

It is clear that the city was trying to restore for tourists: there is lighting, partly paths, railings, but in fact the condition is not very safe (for ordinary tourists), so today the town is closed, covered with mesh and variegated with prohibitory signs. But there are a lot of people who want to climb into the "hole in the fence", the visit is more than real. Free ;-)

I am very impressed by the city, the views from the rocks, and the walk on the abandoned bridge and tunnel…

But all this is unlikely to interest the average tourist, so I'll limit myself to the photo, and if there is interest in fans of all the "destroyed-abandoned-underground", then I'll write more.

I will only mention one thing, in Italy there are a huge number of similar cities abandoned for various reasons. They are very picturesque, ancient, almost all are in the mountains, so visiting such cities is a separate type of tourism and I highly recommend everyone to try to visit such a town in Italy. For example, the city of Craco is the standard of Italian "junk". Just google it.

On the way back to Naples, we stopped in the city of Paestum.

Of course, I recommend it to everyone. Moreover, this is already a significant, famous, visited attraction. But I will say that I was not touched. Perhaps she was fed up with antiquity on other trips. However, there is a large selection of souvenirs, there are already many restaurants and shops. Very close to the huge and wide beaches, perfectly sandy, with pine trees on the shore. By the way, next year I have already bought tickets to Naples. And most likely, we will choose something for vacation between Paestum and Agropoli.
